Is Suarez The Best Striker In The World?

You either love him or hate him, but it's hard to admit that Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is not an outstanding player. The 27 year-old Uruguayan has scored 30 Premier League goals this season and was awarded the Football Writer's Association Player of the Year award as well as the Professional Football Association Player of the Year award. He is the first non-european player to receive the award.

In one of the toughest--if not the toughest--leagues in the world, Suarez shows that he is a deadly striker capable of breaking any defense and finding the net from anywhere on the pitch. 

The striker will have the opportunity to show his talent on the European scene next season as Liverpool is qualified for the next UEFA Champions League. This is the main reason Suarez should remain at the club this summer and not leave for Real Madrid (who tried to lure him in last summer). Suarez even pleaded to leave the club. Good thing Liverpool kept him! 

Suarez is one of those strikers that are unbelievably smart, skilled, and with an incredible work rate for someone whose main job is to score goals. Suarez has a thirst for victory and a rage to win every challenge and 50/50 balls that makes him a constant threat for the opponent. It doesn't matter where he gets the ball, he always makes something good out of it. Suarez also assisted 12 goals this season, making him one of the best passers in Europe. Suarez has wonderful finishing abilities: From long range to close range, with his left or right foot, even his head, Suarez can score in any position. With 30 goals this season, he is only one goal away from the record of most goal scored in a season (31 goals held by Alan Shearer and Cristiano Ronaldo). An even greater achievement since the Uruguayan hasn't taken a single penalty this season. He also missed the first six games of the season! 

So is Suarez the best striker in the world? If you don't consider Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as "pure strikers", which I don't, then yes, he is. Without a doubt. Suarez will try to give Liverpool their first title since 2003. 

And hopefully, he'll be able to show what he can do to the world in a few weeks in Brazil!

Ballon d'Or: When Winning Trophies Really Doesn't Matter!

After months of speculations, the 2013 France Football Ballon d'Or was awarded to Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo in Zurich, Switzerland, on Monday, January 13. The Real Madrid player wins the trophy for the second time (27,99%), beating Barcelona Lionel Messi (24,72%) and Bayern Munich Franck Ribery (23,36%). 

Ronaldo wins a controversial Ballon d'Or for many reason! The first one would be FIFA's decision to postpone the deadline of the votes, allowing two extra weeks to vote. At the time, Ribery was, according to observers, the great favorite for the title. However, those extra days gave Ronaldo the opportunity to score four goals in two games with Portugal and self handedly qualifying his country for the World Cup! A way to show the world that he is an incredible player. 

At the same time, Ribery didn't shine with France, despite a qualification for the competition in Brazil. He played well, but did not have the same impact as Ronaldo did. 

But should that matter? Surely not! 

How can a player who has won every trophy imaginable in a year (Bundesliga, German Cup, Champions League, European Super Cup, Club World Cup), a player who has been elected best player of the Bundesliga and of Europe could lose the Ballon d'Or to players who did not win a single thing (For the exception of the Spanish Liga for Messi)? Maybe if there is a conspiracy?

It seems that voters had a different point of view! Indeed, despite all his trophies Ribery only finished third! THIRD!!

All right, I can accept that Ronaldo's impressive goal scoring record (69 goals in 69 games) and his major role in sending Real Madrid to the Knock-out stage of the Champions League (nine goals in six games) and Portugal to the World Cup makes his victory legitimate, but to award Messi the second place is a proof that some people lost their minds! The guy has been injured for the past two months! He had one of his worst season last year and Barcelona won the Liga because the team is one of the best ever to play the game and Messi did not really play a major role in that! 

Sure, Messi and Ronaldo scored an incredible number of goals this year! So what? The Ballon d'Or is awarded to players who score tons of goals or to players who make their team win and are still entertaining on the field?

Speaking of entertainment, Ribery is the player who dribbled the most this season and by far! More than a thousand dribbles for only 300 for Messi and 250 for Ronaldo! 

But most of all, Ribery is a team player, always making the extra effort to help his teammates on both sides of the field. The French made 49 tackles, almost as twice as Messi, winning 89,8% of them! 

So tell me! What are the true criteria to be elected? 

If the winner of the trophy deserves it because he scores more goals than other players, is entertaining and has a major impact on the game, why a player like Thierry Henry never had it? 

Or if being a team player, winning trophies and being an example on the field is not a criteria either than why Pavel Nedved, Fabio Cannavaro or even Zinedine Zidane ever received the trophy? 

The Ballon d'Or is obviously an individual trophy, awarded to a player who achieved an individual's outstanding year. However, football is and always will be a team game and when you win trophy as a team, you still win them individually! 

Unfortunately for Ribery, it seems that voters do not get the ultimate goal of playing the game, which is winning! And if he thought he was going to win easily, he should have talked to Wesley Sneyder... 

Is Barcelona Messi Dependent?

Two games played without Messi; two loses for Barcelona this past week (1-2 vs Ajax and 0-1 vs Atletico Bilbao). I am starting to see a pattern there. The same pattern I saw last season when Barcelona struggled to pass past PSG in the Champions League, to finally end up demolished by Bayern Munich (0-7 overall). It seems that Barcelona forgets how to play when the Argentine star is not on the field!

A year ago, I felt like this Barcelona team was unbeatable, even without Messi; even with the "B" team on the field. The style of play was always the same, no matter who was on the field and opponents never really found a way to stop them (for the exception of a few games when the other teams were playing with 11 defenders in their last 25 yards and games against great teams like Real madrid or Bayern Munich). Barcelona dominated La Liga from start to finish with an incredible Messi.  

This season, however, Barcelona, despite being on top of La Liga, does not show this great football that we expect to see. Is this because of the arrival of the new manager, Tata Martino, whose philosophy is not exactly the same as Barcelona's? Or is it because the other teams studied hard to stop Barca? In my opinion, it is much more simple than that.

When Messi is on the field, all Barcelona players seem to be better, like transcended. It feels like they know they can't lose the game as long as the four-time Golden Ball recipient is on their side! And who can blame them? We all know Messi can win a game all by himself! He showed it many times! And in the past season, when the Argentinian was absent or was simply having a bad day, other players stepped up and carried the team. Something we hardly see nowadays. 

Indeed, players such as Xavi Hernandez or Iniesta don't have the same impact on the game they had in previous years. The Spanish magic duo is not as brilliant as it was last season. Statistics prove it: in 15 games played in La Liga, Iniesta only scored one goal and provided only one assist. Far from his standards. As for Xavi, the midfielder played 12 games, scoring twice and giving one assist. If his scoring abilities are still there, Xavi's passing skills seem to wear off. Maybe his old age (33), does not give him the energy to get close to the box to deliver clever passes like he used to. Even a few months ago, after Barcelona's downfall against Bayern Munich in the Champions League (0-7), people were wondering if the duo was not coming to an end.

But don't get me wrong, Barcelona is still one of the best teams in the world! Mostly because other players are in great form. For example, Cesc Fabregas seemed to have taken Iniesta's role as finisher and last passer for Barcelona. The former Arsenal player found the net five times in La Liga this season. He is also the league's assist leader with eight. Alexis Sanchez is also brilliant so far this season, scoring eight goals (as many as Messi). Those players are probably the reason why barcelona is still at the top of the league.

One player however is still struggling to have an impact on the game. Brazilian star Neymar only scored four goals in 13 games. As a comparison, Real Madrid's most expensive player, Gareth Bale, already scored seven goals, playing only nine games. However, Neymar did great to help his teammates score, providing eight assists. However, Bale also provided many assists, six, in fewer games. This comparison between the two new faces of La Liga shows that one of them plays a major role when the "real" star is injured (Bale).

So, fire away if you think I am wrong, but I think Barcelona should pray to see Messi come back quickly on the pitch, because the way I see it, they won't stand a chance without him this season...    

Barcelone imbattable?

Un nouveau classico et une nouvelle victoire du Barca 2-1 face a un Real Madrid toujours aussi défensif. Barcelone prend donc une option avant le match retour de ce quart de finale de Coupe du Roi au Camp Nou. 

Encore une fois, on a vu un Real démarrer a fond, avec des contres rapides et tranchants qui permettront a Cristiano Ronaldo d'ouvrir le score des la 11eme minute de jeu. Bien servi en profondeur par Benzema, le portugais va déposer Pique d'un passement de jambes et tromper Pinto, pas exempt de tout reproche sur le coups. 

Le barca alors mené, ne change pas pour autant sa mentalité et continue a faire tourner le ballon et se creer même de très bonnes occasions par Messi, Iniesta. Mais Casillas sort le grand jeu, et quand il semble battu, la barre transversale vient le sauver comme sur la tête d'Alexis Sanchez. 

Au retour de la pause, le match va basculer. Tout d'abord les blaugrana égalise après deux minutes de jeu d'une tête rageuse de Puyol, laissé seul par une défense madrilène apathique a l'image de Pepe. 

Ce fameux Pepe, qui va retomber dans ses travers. Les tacles sont plus rugueux, plus nombreux. Et quand il ne s'agit pas d'un tacle, Pepe écrabouille la main du génie Messi. Un geste qui sera surement sanctionné plus tard. Pepe perd la boule, et le Real n'y est plus. 

Les génies barcelonais ont plus d'espace, plus de ballons, et confinent Madrid dans ses 30 derniers mètres. Et comme toujours avec le barca, le danger vient de partout. Messi, Iniesta, Alexis hypnotisent la défense tandis qu'Abidal se faufile dans le dos. Puis la magie opère...

Messi, en possession du ballon, voit l'appel du français. Un simple joueur aurait tenter une passe au sol, espérant qu'elle passe entre la foret de jambe devant lui. Mais qui dit barcelonais, dit extraterrestre...Messi n'est pas un "simple" joueur. Entouré de trois joueurs, le magicien argentin réussi la passe parfaite au-dessus de la défense qui joue le hors-jeu. Le talent d'Abidal fait le reste...

Bien que le Real ait montré de belles choses, Barcelone reste Barcelone, et reste cette machine a gagner mais surtout cette machine a faire rêver...

Le Tiercé Gagnant de Messi, le Retour du Roi, et le Noel des Clubs.

Messi, Roi du Monde

L’année 2012 commence en beauté avec le sacre du meilleur joueur du monde pour la troisième année consécutive. Lionel Messi remporte a nouveau le Ballon d'Or FIFA. A seulement 24 ans, il rejoint les grands Cruyff, Platini et Van Basten.  

Un sacre logique compte tenu de la saison incroyable de l'argentin.  Cinq titres sur six possibles avec le Barca. Si  sa victoire l'an passé, devant ses coéquipiers champions du monde Xavi et Iniesta, avait fait couler un peu d'encre, celle-ci, en revanche, est indiscutable. 

Le prodige a des statistiques impressionnantes: 59 buts et 37 passes décisives en 70 matchs! L'extraterrestre Messi n'a laissé aucune chance aux autres prétendants, y compris l'autre roi des statistiques, le portugais Cristiano Ronaldo. Le duel des deux géants a tourné a l'avantage du barcelonais avec des matchs exceptionnels lors des classicos. 

La "puce" devrait nous faire rêver pour encore de nombreuses années...

Le Retour du Roi

Le roi c'est bien sur Thierry Henry de retour sous le maillot de son coeur. Arsenal a fait revenir le français pour une pige de quelques mois, profitant de la trêve du championnat américain. Il retrouve donc le club qui lui a tout donné...Tout sauf la ligue des champions, qu'il remportera l’année de son départ d'Arsenal avec Barcelone.

Sur le banc face a Leeds, King Henry était attendu par le public de l'Emirates Stadium. Lorsqu’à la 60eme minute, les supporteurs ont commencé a scander son nom, Arsene Wenger ne pouvait plus se retenir. Avec son nouveau numéro 12, Henry est entré sur la pelouse avec l'envie; l'envie de prouver a tous que les Gunners avaient retrouvé leur roi.

Il aura fallu 10 minutes a Titi pour inscrire son 227eme but sous le maillot rouge et blanc. Bien servi par Song sur le cote gauche de la surface de réparation, il ouvre son pied pour tromper le portier de Leeds. La spéciale de Thierry Henry; Un classique, qui marche toujours aussi bien. Henry va alors prendre les choses en main, diriger les opérations, encourager ses jeunes partenaires. 

Le roi est bel et bien de retour. A 34 ans, on n'attend pas de Henry qu'il marque a chaque match et apporte a Arsenal ce qu'il avait l'habitude d'apporter. En revanche son expérience, sur et en dehors du terrain, ne peut être qu'un plus plus la jeune garde d'Arsenal.

Le Courses de Noel des Clubs

La période des fêtes est toujours très attendu par les fans du ballon rond. On a envie de voir de nouveaux joueurs dans notre club fétiche, envie de voir l’entraîneur que l'on déteste laisser sa place. Les clubs cherchent la bonne affaire ou parfois sortent les gros moyens pour satisfaire leur caprice.

Le Paris St Germain a été la grande attraction de la trêve hivernale. Des grands noms sont apparus sur les tablettes du club parisien. Beckham, Kaka, Pato...mais rien de bien concret jusque la. 

Carlo Ancelotti, nouvel entraîneur parisien est donc pour le moment la seule vraie recrue parisienne, mais il pourrait faire venir le brésilien Pato du Milan AC. 

Pour Beckham, les discussions sont closes, l'anglais préférant rester sous le beau soleil de Los Angeles...et on le comprend. 

Enfin, Kaka a décliné l'offre parisienne et ne souhait pas quitter le Real Madrid sans y avoir triomphe. 

D'argent il en est aussi question du cote de Manchester City. Mais cette fois-ci pour remplir les caisses du club. Le joueur le plus en vue: Carlos Tevez! La bataille s'est jouée entre les deux milans et le PSG. L'Inter ayant même proposé leur meneur de jeu hollandais Sneijder en plus de la somme réclamée! Pourtant c'est bien l'AC Milan qui devrait remporter la mise. Déjà en accord avec le joueur, le Milan AC n'a plus qu'a remplir les conditions mancuniennes.   

On attend bien sur des surprises jusqu’à la fin de la période des transferts, des grosses sommes dépensées, et des retournements de situations!

Real-Barca: Le Barca avec (un peu) de difficulté.

Le dernier classico n'a pas été le plus beau de l'histoire avec une victoire 3-1 du Barca a Bernabeu, mais il a donné certains indices sur les forces de chaque équipe. 

Il n'y a pas grand chose a dire sur le Barca, si ce n'est qu'ils ont joué comme ils en ont l'habitude. Ils ont développé leur football, monopolisé le ballon, et marqué des buts, en soit rien de nouveau. Si il n'y a rien a dire sur leur premier et dernier but, ils ont été bien chanceux sur le deuxième. 

La frappe de Xavi est bien déviée par Marcelo, touche l’intérieur du poteau, et finit au fond des filets. D'autant plus que la passe, qui a poussée Coentrao a taclé, et a renvoyé le ballon plein axe, était destiné a un Messi en position d'hors-jeu. Bien sur, la nouvelle règle du hors-jeu s'applique et Messi n'est donc pas signalé hors-jeu (comme cela avait été le cas pour Iniesta en finale de Coupe du Monde face aux Pays-Bas).

Mais le score ne reflète pas forcement la physionomie du match. Les barcelonais sont tombés face a un nouveau Real. Un Real combattant, un Real entreprenant qui a forcé les blaugrana a l'erreur après seulement 22 secondes de jeu! Mourinho avait demandé a ses joueurs de presser la relance barcelonaise, ce qu'ils ont fait. Et Barcelone a eu bien du mal a se sortir de ce pressing. Les madrilènes ont travaillé dur pour bloquer les barcelonais, et ont récupéré de nombreux ballons dans le camp adverse. 

Le score aurait même pu être de deux a zéro, si Ronaldo n'avait pas gâché une grosse occasion après un excellent travail de Benzema. Seulement le portugais est passé a cote de son match. Il a d'ailleurs manqué le but de l'egalisation (2-2) sur un ballon déposé sur la tête par Xabi Alonso. Seul aux 6 mètres, le numéro 7 madrilène manque le cadre. Impensable pour le pichichi de la liga. On a rarement vu Cristiano Ronaldo manquer des occasions du genre. 

Si la star madrilène est passée a cote de son match, Messi , lui, a fait le boulot. Certes le petit argentin n'a pas marqué mais il est impliqué sur deux des trois buts de son équipe. Il aurait pu marquer très vite en première periode mais Casillas a sorti le grand jeu. 

En revanche. le portier espagnol ne pourra rien face a Alexis Sanchez bien lancé en profondeur par Messi, qui avait auparavant laissé sur place trois défenseurs madrilènes. L'argentin n'a pas eu son rendement habituel mais a bel et bien était décisif. Encore une fois Leo gagne le duel de star face a Cristiano. 

Mais on n'oubliera pas que le Real a posé énormément de problèmes aux barcelonais et s'est crée un grand nombre d'occasions jusqu’à la fin de la rencontre. 

Le Real a montré qu'il avait les moyens de rivaliser a Barcelone. Benzema, meilleur madrilène Samedi, a prouvé qu'il avait le niveau international requis pour jouer a Madrid (même si on n'en doutait pas). 

On attend bien sur avec impatience le prochain classico, et en attendant on va encore se regaler avec suivant le parcours de ces deux équipes en Champions League.
